Galatea one who is milk white and calms the seas
Galatea of the Grey Seas, one of the fifty Nereid nymphs, in Greek mythology, the 50 daughters of the sea god Nereus and sea nymph Doris lived in the Aegean Sea. Usually depicted as beautiful young ladies, sometimes riding the backs of dolphins or sea horses, they took care of the sea’s riches and protected fishermen. Each one represented a different aspect of the sea, such as sand, rocks, waves, and currents. They formed part of the sea god Poseidon’s entourage and lived at the bottom of the sea.

She rises through shifting layers of light and opacity, her body enveloped in translucent whites and sea-glass hues. The tactile encaustic surface blurs water and form, evoking a moment of emergence — both fragile and eternal. Inspired by myth and metamorphosis, this work explores the threshold between silence and breath, stillness and becoming.
Created through a process that merges modern photography and printmaking with the ancient art of encaustic, layers of molten beeswax, oils, and resins are built up and fused with fire. The textured surface invites touch, its translucent depth suggesting both concealment and revelation. A one-of-a-kind encaustic mixed media painting — where photography, molten beeswax, and oils merge to reveal a serene underwater world. Layers of texture and translucency create a luminous depth that can only be achieved through fire and time.
